| The Chinese nation has forged an inherent peace-oriented character and Yi Li (义理) security concept in history. The gentle cultural traits and the overall historical practice of preserving stability have integrated the pursuit of peace into the political and cultural DNA of the Chinese nation, fundamentally determining its non-aggressive and non-expansionist nature, while shaping the Yi Li security concept that places moral principles above mere strategic calculations of interests. The Yi Li security concept is based on the nation’s understanding of the relationship between righteousness and interests. It advocates such peaceful ideas as “cautious and just warfare” and “enhancing cultural excellence and increasing military vigilance” (崇文宣武), while firmly rejecting profit-driven wars of aggression. It upholds the principle of “applying strict moral standards to oneself while extending benevolence to others” (仁之于人，义之于我) as a method of domestic governance. It promotes the great aspiration of “shared future” and “harmony among all nations”. Meanwhile, it refuses to use moral pretenses to coerce other nations and to prioritize one’s own national interests over the interests of other nations or even the common interests of humanity. Transcending the traditional Western security concepts like power security and collective security in theoretical foundations, security paths, and ultimate security pursuits, the Yi Li security concept has provided historical nourishment for China’s Global Security Initiative. In an era when the peace deficits continue to worsen, promoting an international security concept with Chinese characteristics that meets the needs of the times helps break the discourse of security dilemma rooted in Western historical experiences, and provide Chinese wisdom for nations around the world to jointly address global security challenges. |
